Pine trees and cones contain a natural mosquito repellent called "Alpha Pinene". Another factor is unpleasant oils and resins pinecones contain and their strong, woodsy aroma.

Prepare Your Pinecones Found in Montana for Summer Bliss
Pinecones should first be cleaned of any debris and any insects that may be using it for a home. According to Etomoligist.net simply spread the collection of cones and acorns on a cookie sheet and bake at 175 degrees for 1-1/2 to 2 hours. Then place them near doors or windows for best results.
Pinecone mulch can also be beneficial in keeping squirrels or pets away from gardens. Squirrels don't appreciate walking on the rough texture of pinecones; cats are reluctant to step on anything that feels sticky, noisy, or sharp. Have you tried this pinecone hack? Did it work?
