Reasons for Weather Closures at Great Falls Public Pools
Mother Nature in Montana is fickle at best. In 2025 we have already seen snow in our summer months at higher elevations. Not really conducive to wanting to jump into your favorite pool.
The weather in Montana can cause a little bit of havoc when it comes to keeping public pools in the Electric City open for those wishing for a cool dip. But there is a plan in place for those conditions.

For instance, if air temperatures are below 65 degrees (F), the pool will cancel the morning lap swim normally scheduled from 9am-11am. When air temps continue to be 65 degrees or lower at 10am, the open swim for the public will be canceled.

Rain/Thunderstorms and More Can Lead to Great Falls Pools Closing
Rain and thunderstorms are common across our area during the summer months, and they can lead to a closure at the public pools. GFPR closes outdoor areas for consistent rain falling and will also close for thunder and lightning storms.
The department is also prepared for any heatwave that may hit Great Falls as well. Staff are equipped with extra umbrellas to issue to pool visitors and extra water stations are placed at each facility. The GFPR recommends following them on social media or to call at 406-771-1265 to stay up to date on any closure.
