Montana Highway Patrol Troopers Recognized by Attorney General Knudsen
To the brave men and women who sign up for law enforcement: thank you. There is so much going on in the world, it can be easy to take the work of law enforcement for granted - especially when our community is feeling safe.
Recently, however, two highway patrolmen were presented with a prestigious award for their bravery.
Montana Highway Patrol Officers Receive Prestigious Honor
According to a press release from the Montana Department of Justice, two Montana Highway Patrol Officers received the Award of Valor, the Patrol's highest award.
It's awarded to officers who "show an act of heroism and bravery, knowingly expose themselves to obvious life-threatening peril, or react to a situation without regard for personal safety to effect aid or rescue."
And that's exactly what happened last year on April 5, 2025.
According to the press release, MHP officers were notified of an "armed and dangerous suspect" traveling to Montana from Nebraska.

"Sergeant Kilpela located the suspect’s vehicle in Big Timber and called for backup before approaching," the press release said, "Shortly after, Trooper Knapp arrived and attempted to pull the suspect over."
"The suspect did not stop, and a brief pursuit began."
That's when things got a lot more dangerous. According to the report, Sgt. Kilpela unsuccessfully attempted the famous PIT maneuver to get the vehicle to a stop but did get it to go off the road and into an empty lot.
Once they were stopped, the officers positioned their vehicles to corner the suspect. Then, the suspect opened fire on the officers, shooting at them through his windshield. Both officers responded by firing back, eventually killing the suspect.
Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen Honors Montana Highway Patrol Officers
In the press release, Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen shared his appreciation for the officers.
"Words cannot fully express how proud I am of Sergeant Kilpela and Trooper Knapp. When faced with an armed and dangerous fugitive, they did not hesitate and knowingly placed themselves in harm’s way to ensure no innocent lives were lost," said Colonel Kurt Sager.

"They demonstrated extraordinary bravery in the face of immediate and deadly danger. Their teamwork, courage, and integrity represent the highest standard of the law enforcement profession, and for that, I am deeply grateful."
This is just another example of why we should show some appreciation to our officers. There's no telling just how bad this could have ended had it not been for the quick thinking of these men.
