Montana Diesel Prices Have Now Crossed the $6 Mark

When it comes to prices, the last thing anyone wants to see is something jump by 29 cents in one week.

And probably the worst thing to see jump like that is diesel, because the effects are going to be felt far and wide across Montana.

Montana's Diesel Problem Goes Far Beyond the Gas Station

According to NBC Montana, the average price of a gallon of diesel in the state has now gone over $6 a gallon, reaching a record $6.07.

Sure, that's still below the national average, but let's be honest, $6.07 a gallon is still a pretty painful number. And diesel isn't just something truckers have to worry about.

So much depends on diesel because it's the fuel that keeps Montana's economy moving. We're talking about semis delivering everything from groceries to building supplies, tractors working farms and ranches, construction equipment, trains, and, of course, everyday drivers.

The worst part of all of this is that it's not exactly easy to just use less of it.

Montana Diesel Prices Are High, Even If Other States Are Paying More

Animals still need to be fed. Those deliveries can't wait for the price to come back down. That leaves businesses with a pretty simple but unpleasant choice: eat the higher fuel costs or, more likely, pass those costs along to customers.

As we mentioned before, Montana isn't even the most expensive state for diesel right now. AAA is reporting that places like California are well above $8 a gallon.

Still, that doesn't make us feel any better, as we're watching the numbers climb into the triple digits every time we're standing at the pumps.

To find out more about how has the price of gas changed throughout the years, Stacker ran the numbers on the cost of a gallon of gasoline for each of the last 84 years. Using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (released in April 2020), we analyzed the average price for a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline from 1976 to 2020 along with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for unleaded regular gasoline from 1937 to 1976, including the absolute and inflation-adjusted prices for each year.
