Understanding Montana Culture

Those of you who have read my articles before know that I wasn't born in Montana, but like my good friend Skip Walters used to say, "I got here as fast as I could."

I moved here long before the pandemic-era migration of new transplants, so I feel as if I've started to understand those born here.

Becoming Part Of The Montana Fabric

I know I'll never truly be a Montanan because I wasn't born under the Big Sky, but I feel I've acclimated myself into the fabric of the state quite well.

If you are thinking about moving to Montana anytime soon though there are somethings that you won't find in a pamphlet.

We're not talking about advice like "winter can be harsh there" or "don't pet the fluffy cows" type of advice, we're talking things you'd only learn about by living here for a few years.

Real Montana Advice You Only Learn By Living Here

One thing you learn about Montanans right away, is the pride we have in the state we live in.

With the whole state having the same area code, 406, you see 406 everywhere. It's on shirts, hats, coolers, stickers. Some people even tattoo the number on themselves.

Right or wrong, residents have also started to push back against transplants coming to this state, buying up all the property (usually over asking price) and attempting to make Montana what they left behind.
