A Beautiful Mind - Montana Ranks High for Average IQ

As a young man, there are certain things that you may overlook.  In this case, it involves my father.  As that young man, I never really comprehended just exactly what it took to make it on the ranch.  How much knowledge one person must possess just to make a living.

It wasn't until years later that I found out my father is an extremely intelligent person.  With degrees in agriculture and in mechanical engineering that he applied every day on the ranch.  He, and much of our population in Montana, are well above the national average of IQ in the United States.

Figuring Out the Average Intelligence Quotient in Montana

According to Wikipedia, "An intelligence quotient (IQ) is a total score derived from a set of standardized tests or subtests designed to assess human intelligence."  In totally scores, data suggests that "approximately two-thirds of the population scoring between IQ 85 and IQ 115 and about 2 percent each above 130 and below 70.

Based on data released in 2022 and available via the National Library of Medicine, Montana ranks in the top percentile across the United States for average intelligence.

Using that data, Visual Capitalist combined it and IQ estimates that were based on "analysis of exam scores from the Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competency (PIAAC) for adults, and the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) for fourth and eighth grade children."

The results of those numbers show that Montana ranks 5th overall across the United States for average intelligence.

  1. Massachusetts
  2. New Hampshire
  3. North Dakota
  4. Minnesota
  5. Montana

The average IQ for Montana residents is 103.4, compared to Massachusetts at 104.3 IQ.  You can see the full graphic here.
