Ice Cream Recall in Montana Escalates to Highest Level
Well, that certainly escalated quickly. In just a few shorts weeks, a voluntary recall by the Totally Cool, Inc. ice cream brand for contamination concerns has now reached the highest level issued by the Food and Drug Administration.

The product in question, Friendly's Celebration Ice Cream Cake, was first recalled by the company and the FDA in June of this year. The ice cream was confirmed to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
Contamination Risk Means Escalated Level from the FDA in Montana
The concern for the contamination has caused the FDA to escalate the initial recall to a Level 1 risk. The level is only given to products that:
reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a product could cause serious adverse health consequences or death
Listeria, according to a report by Newsweek and interviews with the CDC:
A listeria infection often leads to a range of unpleasant symptoms and can sometimes result in serious illness. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention the bacterium causes around 1,600 people get listeriosis each year, and around 260 of them die as a result.
