Retired Griz Coach Hauck “Un-Retires” for New Job in Illinois
I want to make sure that everyone knows I am first and foremost a Bobcat. With a father that bleeds blue and gold, it was just how I was raised. However, I am also a state of Montana football fan. If the Cats aren't playing for the big game and the Griz are, you bet I am going to cheer that Montana team on.
Despite the blue and gold that flows throughout the veins of my family, and the slight animosity that one feels against an opponent, I can wholeheartedly quote Jerry Reed when I say to the Griz Nation of fans:
"He got the goldmine; you got the shaft."

Retired Griz Coach Hauck "Un-Retires" for New Job in Illinois
Just last week on Wednesday (Feb. 4, 2026) Coach Bobby Hauck of the Montana Grizzly Football team announced his sudden retirement from the program. During the press conference, he cited the pressures of recruitment and the portal option for players making it difficult and not enjoyable to coach anymore.

But now, Hauck has been announced as the new Defensive Coordinator at Illinois, "The Fighting Illini" as of Monday, February 9, 2026. Less than 5 days of a "retirement".
I think I just felt a collective "wince" in the Griz Nation time-space continuum. Ouch.
In making the move, Coach Hauck stated that "Coach Bielema is one of the great head coaches in all of football and I am extremely excited to work for him and the student-athletes and staff here at the University of Illinois. I have a great feeling about the players, the coaches, and the future of this program".
Former Coach Leaves Legacy in Missoula, but is it Now Tarnished?
Even as an MSU fan, I can't deny the legacy and record that Hauck amassed and leaves behind in Missoula. 151 wins (Big Sky Conference record), 13 playoff appearances, 8 Big Sky titles and 4 trips to the National Championship game. Not too shabby. And a tough act to follow for new head coach Bobby Kennedy.
In posts across the internet, many of the Griz Nation are pretty disappointed in their former coach. Rumors in various forums abound with theory or conspiracy about being "forced out" or even the almighty dollar being a catalyst for Hauck to head to the Illini.
Regardless of rumors or Hauck's own reasons, even as a Cat fan, this leaves a bad taste in the mouth. Only 5 days after saying it was all too much. After next season would have seemed a more realistic timeline, in this Montana football fan's opinion.
So now that question comes: Did Coach Hauck tarnish his reputation at the University of Montana, or will his credentials (and records) be enough to keep him on hallowed ground at the stadium?
