
Billings Police Issue Statement on Critical Incident Involving Officer
A 28-year-old Box Elder, Montana man is now in custody at the Yellowstone County Detention Facility and has been charged with a long list of crimes, including assault on a police officer.

The Billings Police Department have released new details of the critical incident with man, which began with an initial report of a suspicious individual who had broken into a vehicle within the city limits of Billings, Montana and escalated to an officer discharging his weapon at the individual.

The original report and incident began on March 26, 2026, in Billings, with officers arriving to find the suspect at the location. Initial verbal contact with the male resulted in the suspect running from officers.

Just moments later, the suspect reached for a firearm in his waistband, and a veteran officer discharged his weapon, hitting the suspect in the head. As additional officers arrived, more verbal instructions were ignored by the suspect, who was still in possession of the firearm. Officers then used a beanbag projectile to cause the male to move away from the weapon, upon which he was taken into custody without further incident.
Suspect Transferred to Hospital - List of Formal Charges Announced
After his arrest, the suspect, identified in the press release as Caleb Denny from Box Elder, was administered first aid by officers until medical personnel arrived on scene. He was then transferred to the hospital in stable condition. He was released to police custody on March 29, 2026.
Officers collected a Model 1911 .45 caliber weapon from the scene. Denny is now charged with 3 counts of assault on a Peace Officer, criminal possession of dangerous drugs, obstructing a peace officer, resisting arrest and criminal trespass to a vehicle. No court date was announced in the press release.
