As A Montanan, I Hate That I Like This New Legislation from California
Yep, native Montanan here, and I am agreeing with stuff coming from California.
Now, hold your pens and keyboards before you start roasting me in Davidson Park downtown. This legislation might actually be a benefit to society. Or at least the health part of our society.
And no, they aren't coming to take away your Skittles.
What Is the Skittles Legislation Coming Out of California All About?
You may have heard it referred to as the above, but in reality, this is actually the California Food Act in legal terms. The aim of this legislation is to do away with some of those bad ingredients that we find in some of our favorite foods. And no, they aren't just talking about candy type items that we all enjoy.
Earlier this week, that legislation has made its way to Govenor Gavin Newsome's desk. Whether he signs that into law is still to be seen, but it would limit much of the cancer-causing ingredients in those snacks.
What's The Hubbub with These Ingredients Anyway? Are They Bad?
The ingredients that are in question are:
- brominated vegetable oil
- potassium bromate
- propylparaben
- red dye No. 3
How bad are these? Well, for instance, the Food and Drug Administration in the early 1990's banned the use of red dye No. 3 in cosmetics because it has been shown to cause cancer in lab mice.
Other countries outside of the US already have banned the sale or manufacture of many of these products.
So, in short, sure I support this. Getting bad things out of our food chain is a must. Do you agree or disagree? Is big government just trying to tell us how to live? Let us know in the comments of our social media, via the app chat feature or you can email me here.
